Fired FBI Director James Comey (AP)

The Senate Leadership Fund on Tuesday slammed former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon's "60 Minutes" comments about President Donald Trump's firing of James Comey as "the biggest mistake in modern political history."

"Steve Bannon is dead wrong," said fund president and CEO Steven Law in a statement via Twitter. "Every fact that has come out about James Comey's handling of the Clinton email investigation has affirmed the rightness of President Trump's decision."

In his interview Sunday with Charlie Rose, Bannon said he opposed Comey's firing as FBI director in May, which led to the Justice Department naming Robert Mueller as special counsel in the Russia investigation.

"I don't think there's any doubt that if James Comey had not been fired we would not have a special counsel," Bannon told Rose. "We would not have the Mueller investigation.

"We would not have the Mueller investigation in the breadth that clearly Mr. Mueller is going."

The Senate Leadership Fund is backed by Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.
