Vice President Mike Pence is backing up President Donald Trump’s position that the World Health Organization may have mishandled the coronavirus outbreak.
Pence vowed that the U.S. will ask WHO “tough questions” over how the global health agency has dealt with the pandemic and how the organization “could have been so wrong.”
"This is a president who believes in accountability, and the American taxpayers provide tens of millions of dollars to the World Health Organization," Pence said during an interview on "Hannity." "And as the president said yesterday, I suspect we will continue to do that, but that doesn't mean that at the right time in the future, we aren't going to ask the tough questions about how the World Health Organization could have been so wrong.”
His comments on WHO come after Trump accused the organization of being “very China-centric” and tweeted that they “really blew it” in their response to the outbreak of the virus. He threatened to take a look at possibly cutting the amount of funding the country gives to WHO. In 2019, records show the U.S. contributed more than $400 million.
WHO director Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus fired back at Trump for his criticism and urged him not to politicize the crisis, “if you don’t want many more body bags.”
