Democrats are wasting time trying to prove Neil Gorsuch is unfit to sit on the U.S. Supreme Court and will be "shooting themselves in the foot" if they try to filibuster his confirmation, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee says.
"The Democrats, or at least their leader [Sen.] Chuck Schumer, are now vowing to make good on their Quixotic threat to filibuster his nomination," the two-time GOP presidential candidate wrote late Thursday on his Facebook page.
"This is a judge so well-qualified and highly-regarded that his nomination to his current post was approved unanimously — the aye votes included Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and yes, Chuck Schumer — so their current grave objections can pretty obviously be chalked up to 'We hate Trump! Waaah!'"
"The Democrats are taking a massive risk by threatening to veto an obviously super-qualified nominee. Their clear partisan intransigence would give [Senate Majority Leader] Mitch McConnell the perfect cover to extend the nuclear option that [former Senate Minority Leader] Harry Reid launched to SCOTUS nominees."
Huckabee said if that option is used and Trump later has the chance to nominate another Supreme Court justice during his term, it would take only 51 votes to approve that jurist, making his or her approval a shoo-in.
"That might be someone much more overtly conservative, and the Democrats would have squandered their filibuster power. But then, thinking ahead to unintended consequences is not a strong suit of the current Democratic leadership," he said.
"So if anyone is 'facing a critical blow' due to this filibuster threat, its Chuck Schumer and the Democrats, who are seriously flirting with the idea of shooting themselves in the foot."
