Media Watchdog: ABC, CBS, NBC Take a Powder on Midterms

By    |   Thursday, 30 October 2014 01:10 PM

The mainstream media is "trying not to cover the midterms," in light of the recent news that some major media outlets are virtually ignoring the midterm elections, says Newsbusters executive editor and Media Research Center official Tim Graham.

The Media Research Center released a study on Oct. 22 comparing coverage of the 2006 midterms, when Democrats made significant gains, to the 2014 midterms, in which Republicans are expected to make significant gains, and found from Sept. 1 through Oct. 20, the "CBS Evening News," "NBC Nightly News," and "ABC's World News" aired only 25 midterm stories total, compared to 159 midterm stories leading up to the election in 2006.

"ABC's World News, in particular, we had found that from June 11 forward into Oct. 20, they had not done a report on the midterms," Graham told J.D. Hayworth and Miranda Khan on "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV.

"There's a six to one differential in the amount of coverage," he explained. "If you're comparing ABC, it's like 33 to nothing."

"How can you spend half the year ignoring the fact there are midterm elections?" he asked.

"The only obvious answer is they're not going well for the Democrats, therefore they're not newsworthy," he said.

"We understand these days the news is full of lots of Kardashians and all kinds of garbage like that, but you can still do two minutes here and there on how the Democrats and the Republicans are doing," he added. "They're trying not to do that."

According to the director of media analysis for the Media Research Center "not only are they not covering the midterms, they've tried very hard not to discuss the poll results as we previously established."

"They have been much more interested in covering sexual assault in the NFL or lately they've been much more interested in Ebola," Graham explained.

"They focus on something entirely different than . . . the political landscape," he said.

"It's especially important right now when there's early voting going on through the whole month of October," he added. "They tried to stay really quiet."

"We're going to all be surprised when the results come in," Graham said. "We're going to go back and look at all this and say how much different would the results have been if the media actually covered these races?"
