Detroit Free Press Poll: Trump Pulls Within Margin of Error in Michigan

The tightening presidential race has been felt in Michigan recently, too, as Donald Trump has pulled to within four points of Hillary Clinton – the margin of error – in the latest EPIC-MRA poll Friday from the Detroit Free Press.

Clinton had held a seven-point lead in the past edition of this poll last week, and now Michigan's 16 electoral votes are up for grabs amid this shaky statistical tie.

The paper reported an unusually high number of undecided voters at 13 percent, speculating it is due to "high unfavorable marks voters give both major party candidates" and might led to lower voter turnout.

"Half of them I think are going to end up not going to the polls," EPIC-MRA pollster Bernie Porn told the paper. "A lot of them are not motivated to vote."

The poll surveyed 600 likely voters Nov. 1-3 with the four-point margin of error:

  • Clinton 42 percent.
  • Trump 38 percent.
  • Libertarian Gary Johnson 5 percent.

Clinton's lead slipped despite gaining a point in a week, meaning Trump's four-point gain came from undecideds and Johnson voters. Johnson's support in this poll has fallen from nine points two weeks ago, according to the poll.

The Free Press also reported polls before the March Democratic primary that gave Clinton a double-digit lead, but Clinton lost the state narrowly to Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., a sign that worries Democrats before Tuesday's election.
