Official: Mexico National Guard to Deploy on Southern Border

Friday, 07 June 2019 09:47 PM EDT

Mexico's National Guard will begin deploying on Mexico's southern border with Guatemala from Monday to contain the flow of migrants headed to the United States, Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said on Friday.

Speaking after Washington and Mexico announced a deal to avert a trade war by stemming a surge of mostly Central American migrants, Ebrard said the accord did not contain a proposal made by the Trump administration to return asylum seekers from Guatemala to Mexico, and Honduran and Salvadoran asylum seekers to Guatemala.
