Rep. Luke Messer is pushing congressional lawmakers to back President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, The Hill is reporting.
Messer, R-Ind., said the president deserves the award for his role in getting peace talks started between North and South Korea.
"We are seeing unprecedented progress toward peace, and it’s a direct result of President Trump's strong leadership," Messer said.
His comments came Friday following North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in agreeing to end their seven-decade war this year and pursue denuclearization.
"Following this historic announcement, President Trump should get the Nobel Peace Prize,” said Messer, who is battling other Republicans to see who will to face Democratic Sen. Joe Donnelly of Indiana in the fall. “Our peace through strength strategy is delivering never before seen results."
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-SC, speaking on TV's "Fox and Friends," said if the two nations do sign a treaty, Trump "deserves the Nobel Peace Prize."
