Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., says Democrats have a 50-50 shot of flipping the upper chamber.

''It's a 50-50 proposition. We have a lot of exposure. This is a huge Republican class," McConnell said Wednesday during a campaign stop in Kentucky. "There are dogfights all over the country."

Republicans hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate, though several polling sites give Democrats a solid chance of winning back the upper chamber for the first time since 2014.

FiveThirtyEight says Democrats have an 80 percent chance of holding between 48 and 56 seats, while the Cook Political Report calls Democrats the ''clear favorite'' to take control of the Senate.

McConnell, who is up in polls against Democratic challenger Amy McGrath, is confident he will be successful.

''I've made my case to the people of Kentucky; I think it's a convincing case,'' he told the crowd Wednesday.

McConnell also said 2020 is the "most important election," painting Democrats as embracing a "whole new level of radicalism."

"If you look at the Democratic Party today, you ought to be frightened," McConnell told the crowd. "We're fighting for our way of life."
