The White House will likely take a "very deep dive" into investigating the use of bump stock devices such as those reportedly used by Las Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock in his attack on a country music festival Sunday, Rep. Mark Amodei said Thursday.
The Nevada Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" program that he spoke with President Donald Trump on Wednesday, during his visit to the city, and while Trump didn't give him his own opinion, "the president's staff was very deep into the issue confirming what the history was of how this came about."
The White House is doing its homework on the issue, said Amodei, and he believes officials have been in discussion with interest groups on both sides, including the National Rifle Association.
"A lot of people have said we need to be a little bit considerate of those folks who are victims, in the timing sense, [but] I think you'll see the timing on this administratively and congressionally be something unusual based on that," the congressman said.
However, he said he'd rather wait to see a bill before saying for sure if he'd vote to ban bump stocks.
Amodei said people in his state were happy that Trump came to visit, because "being from Nevada, we don't get a lot of things like that. I can tell you that it was pretty attention getting to see the people on the streets and the warmth from the mayor and the sheriff, obviously. I'm talking about sincere stuff. Not political snapshots."
