House Republican Conference Chair Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., on Thursday introduced a bill to prevent President Joe Biden from placing moratoriums on oil, gas, and coal leasing on federal lands, Fox Business reports.
Biden, during his first week in office, signed multiple executive orders focused on fossil fuels and leases for oil and gas on public lands and offshore waters, and is reportedly considering more, according to The Washington Post.
In response, Cheney introduced The Safeguarding Oil and Gas Leasing and Permitting Act and The Safeguarding Coal Leasing Act to prevent Biden from placing moratoriums without a joint resolution from Congress.
"The executive actions from the Biden Administration banning new leasing and permitting on federal land endanger our economy and threaten our national security," the congresswoman said in a statement. "The legislation I am introducing today would safeguard against these damaging orders, and prevent the job loss, higher energy costs, and loss of revenue that promises to come with them."
She added that "These bills will defend the interests of the people of Wyoming and our nation, and I will work with partners in Washington to push for their consideration."
Cheney’s fellow Wyoming Republican, Sen. Cynthia Lummis, has introduced separate legislation focused on limiting Biden’s ability to impose a leasing moratorium on federal lands, which she said “is going to cost up to $700 billion in GDP by 2030,” and could “destroy nearly a million jobs by 2022.”
