Zeldin: Best for Trump to Have 'Maximum Amount of Transparency'
CNN's "New Day"/Twitter

Rep. Lee Zeldin, R-N.Y., on Tuesday stressed the importance of transparency for President Donald Trump over a recent report that he dictated a misleading statement about his son's meeting with a Russian lawyer.

"It's always best to have the maximum amount of transparency on any issue that is before you, as it obviously played out in this particular case with the few days in a row of the story coming out," he said on CNN's "New Day."

The Washington Post published a story on Monday claiming that Trump personally dictated a statement that Donald Trump Jr. and the lawyer "primarily discussed a program about the adoption of Russian children," though Trump Jr. later admitted that he had been offered compromising information on his father's then-opponent Hillary Clinton.

The Post notes that "It remains unclear exactly how much the president knew at the time… about Trump Jr.'s meeting," which Zeldin pointed out.

"I would be really interested in knowing what the president knew at that time," he said. "The president dictated a statement and obviously as it played out over the course of a few days, it's good to provide maximum amount of information up front."
