Former Army Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson said that throughout all his years of watching and participating in world events, he's "never been so concerned" about the United States and global relations as he is today, The Hill reported Saturday.
"I've been through the Cuban missile crisis. I've been through the Bay of Pigs before that, Vietnam War, the two Iraq wars, and so forth, Wilkerson told MSNBC Saturday.
“I've got to tell you, though, I've never been so concerned as I am now for the state of this country and world relations."
Wilkerson, who served as chief of staff to former Secretary of State Colin Powell, based his comments on the tensions the U.S. faces on several fronts, including its relations with Russia, Syria, Afghanistan and North Korea.
The past two weeks have seen President Donald Trump launch a surprise missile attack against Syria in response to charges Syrian President Bashar al-Assad attacked civilians with chemical weapons in the northern part of the country. That attack also strained relations with Russia over its support of the Assad regime, just as Trump was beginning to attempt to forge a friendlier dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Syrian attack also sent a warning to North Korea amid calls for leader Kim Jong Un to dispense with its nuclear weapons program. And, on Thursday, the U.S. military launched its largest non-nuclear missile against ISIS terrorists in Afghanistan.
