President Donald Trump's challenge of the Electoral College results, claims of voter fraud, and rallying up his supporters "went too far," according to outgoing White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow.
"I do believe he went too far with his rally," Kudlow told the Washington Examiner on Tuesday.
"He went too far. I agree. He should have stepped in sooner."
Kudlow added the president was measured and presidential in later video condemnations of the storming of the Capitol, but America could have done without the violence that left five dead Jan. 6.
"I wish he had said what he said in his video at the rally, No. 1," Kudlow said. "And I wish he would say this every single day."
Once the loss to Democrat Joe Biden was inevitable, Trump should have turned his focus to trumpeting his administration's successes instead of focusing on election loss, he added.
"I wish he had played his cards differently," Kudlow continued. "I felt that after the Electoral College certified Biden as president-elect, I would have greatly preferred that President Trump spend time on his great achievements, of which he had many."
Despite many in the Trump administration jumping off the sinking ship in the final weeks, Kudlow stayed on until the end and said he was too principled to forgo his patriotic duty.
"We had government business to do, and we needed to do it," Kudlow told the Examiner. "You just can't walk on the American people. You just can't do that."
