President Donald Trump "cannot say no," to an interview request from Robert Mueller, and could even be impeached if he refuses to meet with the special counsel under a subpoena, one of ex-President Bill Clinton's top lawyers tells CBS News.
Appearing on CBSN's "Red & Blue" program, Lanny Davis said Trump could try to say no, but Mueller has the "subpoena power to drag him in front of a grand jury."
If he still says no, Davis said, "he will either be impeached, or he will be pushed out of office because he's committing a political offense he can never recover from."
"God knows, we wanted President Clinton to say no to appearing on national television with a videotape before a grand jury," Davis told CBSN's DeMarco Morgan. "I suffered watching him sitting on a television set for an entire day, but he could not say no. Why? Because he's president. But on the other hand, Donald Trump forgets the presidency is beyond Donald Trump."
But Davis cautioned that Democrats should not push for impeachment unless there is a bi-partisan call for such a drastic measure.
Trump has said he would be glad to meet with Mueller, but that it would be up to his lawyers.
Davis, who represented Clinton during special counsel Ken Starr's probes in the 1990s, said Trump is "going to have a problem in [a] perjury case, false statement case, doesn't matter whether he's under oath or not, if he makes one false statement, that's a felony."
Davis appeared on CBSN to push his new book: "The Unmaking of the President 2016: How FBI Director James Comey Cost Hillary Clinton the Presidency."
