The former special U.S. envoy Kurt Volker's testimony might help exonerate President Donald Trump against election meddling accusations because it pins the activity on lawyer Rudy Giuliani, sources told Axios.
Volker reportedly testified in the closed-door House Democrat impeachment inquiry, Acting U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bill Taylor hesitated taking the job over concerns Giuliani was conducting his own foreign diplomacy agenda, according to the report.
President Trump also was allegedly prioritizing Giuliani over career diplomatic professionals.
"Look, Giuliani does not represent the U.S. government," Volker reportedly testified as having told Taylor, per Axios sources. "Don't worry about that."
Taylor, who feared also Ukraine was a chip related to Russia, per the report, is going to testify before the House Democratic-led committees next week.
"He was just worried [Ukraine] was going to get undermined at some point," Volker reportedly testified, per Axios sources. "Hanging over everyone’s head in the expert community is, is there some grand bargain with Russia where we throw Ukraine under the bus?"
Volker testified earlier this month he recommended Taylor to replace former Amb. Marie Yovanovitch.
