South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem will hold a fundraiser on March 5 for her reelection campaign at former President Donald Trump’s Palm Beach resort, Politico reported on Tuesday.
The event for Noem, who is up for relelction in 2022, will be hosted by Donald Trump Jr. and his girlfriend Kimberly Guilfoyle at Mar-a-Lago.
The fundraiser comes as leading Republicans debate how closely to tie the GOP to the former president.
The event is also Trump Jr.’s first such fundraiser of the new election cycle and is an early indication of who he intends to anoint the former president's next generation of backers.
Noem has been mentioned as a future presidential candidate, but she and other potential 2024 contenders are waiting for Trump himself to declare his intentions.
The South Dakota governor spoke at Trump’s July 4 event last year at Mount Rushmore. Financial disclosure forms made public last month showed that she gave Trump a $1,100 replica of the monument featuring his own face on it.
Before the fundraiser, Noem is scheduled to speak this weekend at the Conservative Policy Action Conference in Orlando. She is also scheduled to speak in April at a Republican National Committee donor summit in Palm Beach.
Public health experts have harshly criticized Noem for not taking the coronavirus pandemic seriously. Her state, which has less than 900,000 people, has had more than 1,800 deaths from COVID-19, which is one of the worst death rates, proportionately, in the US.
