House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, with the time drawing near for the Republican tax reform proposal to come for a vote, argued Monday with Democratic leaders' insistence that the plan will cost Americans more money.
He insisted it contains cuts that will make the United States stronger.
"Remember, when [Minority Leader] Nancy Pelosi would say those types of things, they always go on radar," the California Republican told Fox News' "Fox and Friends" program. "The most you can ever get when you tell something that's not true is 'four pinocchios,' and she's gotten four."
If a family of four brings in $73,000, they will save more than $2,000 on their taxes, McCarthy pointed out.
"The after tax of a family is going to increase their income by 1.8 percent. This is a tax cut. If you're a family of four making $55,000, you pay zero in federal tax. This is an advantage for all of America to get stronger and more and more competitive."
McCarthy said he has faith the bill will pass, albeit closely, in the Senate, even though Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, has returned home for the Christmas holiday following treatment for his brain tumor.
"This version is even better than the first one too because we took the best of both bills," said McCarthy, "but we need to keep John McCain and his family in our prayers."
Meanwhile, he blamed Democrats for playing political games with the national spending bill as the deadline approaches this weekend.
"Normally when it comes to these continuing resolutions where it's funding government for a short time, it's usually half the Republicans, half the Democrats come together to do that," said McCarthy. "But really, they're playing political games because they think Republicans will get blamed for shutting down the government when they're doing it."
