Republican leaders could send the House of Representatives members home as the government remains on a path to shutdown, The Washington Post reported.
"We've done our job," said Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., the House majority leader, referring to a continuing resolution to fund the government through Feb. 16 that passed in the House, The Post reported.
"Sen. (Chuck) Schumer needs to decide if he wants a shutdown," McCarthy said.
McCarthy said he would release his members for a planned one-week recess, but leadership later advised members that additional votes might be required on Friday, The Post reported.
Senate Republicans were short of the 60 votes that would be needed to advance the continuing resolution. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said that Democrats would be held responsible for a shutdown, although Republicans control the House, Senate, and Congress, according to The Washington Post's report.
The House's impending departure lowered the chances that Congress would extend funding for a few days, which Democrats have requested.
Democrats have opposed any resolution that does not address protection for young immigrants in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, or address other priorities including disaster relief, The Post report said.
Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., on Wednesday pushed for the necessity of helping people in DACA, during a speech in the Senate.
Durbin said that a Thursday meeting with top White House and administration officials a "promising beginning" to an agreement to help DACA recipients,
Politico reported.
