House Republicans need to deliver on their promise to repeal and replace Obamacare while moving forward with tax reform measures, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady said Wednesday.
"There is $1 trillion of tax hikes we cut in that repeal bill that is important to getting the economy going and clearing the way for tax reform," the Texas Republican told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program.
"We have to get this repeal done," he added.
However, lawmakers aren't biding their time while waiting for healthcare reform legislation to roll out, but have been "running a parallel path" on tax reform since the November election, Brady continued.
"The Trump team is engaged on every step," said Brady. "The best news last week — when people were paying attention to President [Donald] Trump's principle — what they may have missed, the president will work with the House and Senate to get on one page with one approach on tax reform and move it forward this year."
Tax reform isn't about benefiting the nation's wealthier citizens, but about "growing jobs and growing paychecks in a big way," Brady continued.
"We go bolder than that. So did the president. The concept most Americans could file their taxes on a postcard is really exciting, and [so is] the thought that we could leapfrog America from 31st in the world in competitiveness in that top three and stay there."
And for the greatest growth over the greatest number of years, "tax reform needs to be bold, needs to be balanced in the budget, needs to be permanent," said Brady.
Meanwhile, a border tax has been discussed as a means for gaining revenue in the short term, as has been a gas tax.
"Border adjustability is a very key principle because it says for the first time, all products will be taxed equally in America," said Brady. "We take the made in America tax off our products, so going forward there won't be huge tax breaks for foreign products over [those] made in America. That is really critical."
