Kentucky's Democratic senatorial candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes said that on the issue of coal she strongly disagrees with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, The Hill reported.

The Kentucky secretary of state reported having had "very strong words" with Reid when the two met at a recent Washington fundraiser.

Grimes spoke of the encounter in the course of her debate Monday night with Republican incumbent Sen. Mitch McConnell on public television station KET.

"I did have very strong words for Sen. Reid regarding an energy-plus philosophy I believe he is misguided on as well as the president," she said.

"Coal keeps the lights on here in Kentucky," she said, The Hill reported.

She added that McConnell, using money supplied by billionaires Charles and David Koch, had tried to distort her position on coal.

"You and your henchmen the Koch brothers, you can mislead Kentuckians with $50 million in negative, nasty ads, but I do speak for myself," she said, according to The Hill.

McConnell, in turn, said Grimes failed to make the case for coal within her party and would stand with Reid in the Senate.

"This is Harry Reid that she will vote for to make majority leader of the Senate if she goes there," he said, The Hill reported. "He's the guy who said coal makes you sick."
