Support among Republican women for Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court took an 18-point nosedive in a week amid allegations of sexual misconduct, a new poll showed.
The Morning Consult survey for Politicohttps://morningconsult.com/2018/09/26/republican-women-lose-faith-kavanaugh-trump-after-week-accusations/ released Wednesday found Kavanaugh’s net support among Republicans — the share who oppose his confirmation subtracted from those who support it — dropped 11 points, with 58 percent now in support of his confirmation and 14 percent opposed.
The decline was fueled by a precipitous drop in support among GOP woman, with 49 percent now in favor and 15 percent opposed to Kavanaugh’s confirmation — a decline of 18 points from last week, the survey found.
The poll also found that Kavanaugh’s support is underwater with voters for the first time, with 34 percent of registered voters supporting his confirmation and 37 percent opposing it — a 5-point decline from last week.
According to the poll, views of President Donald Trump over the past week have also been dragged down alongside those of his nominee, with 72 percent of GOP voters approving of the president and 23 percent disapproving, down 16 points from last week’s survey.
Among GOP women, the drop was 19 points since last week, with 68 percent approving and 26 percent disapproving.
The latest poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points overall, and plus or minus 4 percentage points for GOP voters.
The survey was taken after Christine Blasey Ford alleged that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her, and Deborah Ramirez accused him of exposing himself to her. But it was conducted before Kavanaugh appeared on Fox News https://www.newsmax.com/politics/brett-kavanaugh-sexual-assault-allegations-senate/2018/09/24/id/883207/ to defend himself against those accusations — and prior to a third accuser, Julie Swetnick, going public https://www.newsmax.com/us/us-court-politics-assault/2018/09/26/id/883534/ with allegations of sexual misconduct.
