Republicans are to witness a "disastrous" loss in November whether the GOP presidential nominee is Donald Trump or Ted Cruz, predicts Judd Gregg, a former governor and three-term senator from New Hampshire.
"A devastating defeat for the nominee in November is near-certain, a loss of control of the Senate is likely and even a similar loss in the House is possible," Greg writes in a blistering opinion piece published Monday on
The Hill.
He calls it "the functional equivalent of self-immolation."
But Gregg insists there is a silver lining the GOP should grab by ending its ongoing political procrastination, particularly in the Senate.
"This Congress, which will most likely be the last Republican Congress for some time, needs to use its majorities to lay down significant conservative policy markers," Gregg writes.
"These markers will also give Republicans a basis for rebuilding the party on strong, clear policies in the 'post-Donald' or 'post-Ted' period of resurrection. The first of these initiatives should be major tax reform passed by both Houses, now."
He also urges lawmakers not to keep trying to squash the Affordable Care Act, to rid the Social Security disability system of fraud and revamp the Veteran's Administration.
