Democrats have to decide the “next step” after special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe, and if it’s impeachment of President Donald Trump, they should “go hard or go home,” Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., said Sunday.
In an interview on CBS News’ “Face The Nation,” Kennedy said impeachment would be near-impossible in the Senate.
“The next step in this, my Democratic friends have got to make a decision on impeachment,” he said. “I think impeachment will be a Sisyphean task and tough going in the Senate, but my advice to my Democratic friends is, if you want to do it, go hard or go home.
“If you want to do it, go to Amazon online, buy spine, and do it,” he continued. “If you are not going to do it, then let us get back to work.”
Kennedy also supported Attorney General William Barr’s call for a probe of the FBI Russia investigators, calling possible surveillance of both 2016 campaigns “breathtaking.”
“Let's look at the facts, forget the spin,” he said. “In the 2016 election, the FBI, maybe the CIA and the Department of Justice decided to investigate both presidential candidates, [former] secretary [of state Hillary] Clinton and then nominee president [Donald] Trump. That's pretty breathtaking. And arguably those investigations had an impact on the election. … that's a pretty serious step by the FBI and the Justice Department. I would like to know why they did it.
“I do believe there were some people, a small handful of people at those agencies that acted on their political beliefs either for Trump or for Clinton or against Trump or against Clinton and I don't want to see it happen again.”
