Pollster Zogby: Battleground Races 'Still Too Close' to Call

Top pollster John Zogby says the midterm elections that will determine control of the Senate are too close to call.

"These battleground races are still too close . . . even in some of the races where there have been steady leads on the part of the Republicans," Zogby, CEO of Zogby Analytics, said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"[Voters] do not like Barack Obama, are not enamored with Democrats, and Democrats are not polling well," Zogby said.

"By the same token, the GOP is not running away with any of this, and that's a very important question that Republicans have to ask themselves. In an atmosphere like this, why are they not polling 52 percent or 55 percent?"

Zogby said Republicans are getting "good marks" on foreign policy and national security.

"Those are two of the dominant issues of the day, but still, there are 25-33 percent who are saying [they are for] neither party. That's the thing that makes this a wild card for next week," he said.

"Republicans are doing a very good job bringing most Republicans out to vote, but as you can tell from the polling numbers, that's just not enough yet to close the deal, and a substantial number of independents are undecided.

"On the flip side of that, there is still no indication that the Democratic bases are closing ranks with Democratic candidates. We're still not seeing young people and substantial numbers of Latinos."

Zogby said next week's midterms will be a "turnout election" that could yield surprises.

"If you're going to have a turnout like you got in 2010, the GOP will do okay. But if younger people and African-Americans . . . turn out to vote, it can be a different story," he said.
