Former President Barack Obama and singer John Legend have teamed up for a one-minute spot urging voters to send Georgia Democrat Jon Ossoff to the Senate.
To the backdrop of Legend, a Grammy, Emmy, Oscar, and Tony-award winning singer, singing the song "Georgia on My Mind," Obama narrates the spot's message, saying sending Ossoff to the Senate will help defeat coronavirus, rebuilt the economy, and more.
"This year has tested America's spirits," Obama says, as a video shows scenes from the coronavirus pandemic, including people wearing masks and attending a funeral, and from the summer's racial equality marches. "We've lost loved ones, faced injustice, struggled to make ends meet, but we kept at it."
The former president adds that we "struggled to make ends meet but we kept at it, we looked out for each other, and when the moment came to reject fear and division and send a message for change, Georgia stepped up."
He then tells voters that America is counting on them to send Ossoff to the Senate "to beat this virus and rebuild our economy [and] to make sure everybody can afford healthcare."
Obama also mentions late Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., who was a civil rights leader, calling on Georgians to "carry the torch" that the lawmaker "passed to us with a new voting rights act that secures equal justice for all Georgia."
The ad wraps up with text urging voters to cast their ballots by Jan. 5, the official day for the runoff election that will pit Ossoff against incumbent GOP Sen. David Perdue.
Georgia's race will determine which party controls the Senate next year. If both Ossoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock, the Democrat running against incumbent GOP Sen. Kelly Loeffler, win, Democrats will effectively have the Senate majority. If the Democrats lose one or both of the runoff races, the Republicans will keep the majority.
