Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., argued Thursday on Fox News the wealthy deserve tax breaks as much as poor Americans.
When asked if the Republican tax plan will include a tax break for the rich, Kennedy said "if it's up to me, then it will."
The senator added, "I don't think you ought to make tax policy on the basis of class. If you pay most of the taxes, then you ought to get a tax cut."
Although he voiced support for lowing the top tax rate, he did not say if it would be lowered in the bill released Thursday, after the interview.
"We've got to cut taxes, but we've got to keep an eye toward our debt," Kennedy said. "And the only way to do that is to go through the tax code, and look at all the loopholes, and close some of them.
The senator told Salon on Thursday he is not sure about raising the bottom tax rate from 10 percent to 12 percent, saying he is "not sure the flame's worth the candle."
"I understand why there's a move to 12 percent and it can be explained, but it's difficult to explain, and I'm not sure the flame's worth the candle. We're talking about just going back to the 10."
