Rep. John Katko, R-N.Y., said special counsel Robert Mueller must continue his Russia probe and maintained "it’s not a witch hunt."
His comments came in an interview with Syracuse.com.
He said the convictions of Paul Manafort, the former campaign chairman for President Donald Trump and the guilty plea by Michael Cohen, who had been the president’s personal attorney, convinced him the probe must go on.
"This raises it to another level of concern, there's no question about it," Katko said Wednesday. "I think we have to see this investigation through. It's not a witch hunt."
His comments appear to be a push back on Trump, who has consistently called the probe a "witch hunt."
Trump used the phrase again in an early morning tweet on Thursday.
"NO COLLUSION - RIGGED WITCH HUNT!" he wrote in all capital letters.
Katko refused to speculate about the outcome of the Mueller probe, but noted the recent convictions.
"When people around you are starting to get themselves convicted, that's obviously a point of concern," he said referring to Trump.
That's why the Mueller investigation must continue, in my mind. I think we have to support it."
