Sen. Cornyn: Can't Make 'Final Conclusion' on Wiretapping Yet

Republican Sen. John Cornyn said Tuesday he is not ready to conclude that President Donald Trump's assertion that former President Barack Obama's administration wiretapped him before the election was false, even after FBI Director James Comey said that no surveillance took place.

Speaking on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," the Senate majority whip said there was not enough evidence to reach a "final conclusion" on the issue.

"I was a judge for 13 years in Texas before I came to the U.S. Senate," Cornyn said. "I've always believed you ought to wait until you know all the evidence before you reach a conclusion. So I'm not ready to reach conclusions before the evidence is complete."

Cornyn said that it was "within the realm of possibility" that, as some reports have said, someone in the Obama administration received a FISA warrant on the Russian ambassador and that because former national security adviser Gen. Michael Flynn had spoken with the ambassador, he too was surveilled.

"That may have been what the president was referring to."

When asked if the public can trust that the Senate Intelligence Committee can investigate alleged ties between the Trump administration and Russian officials as Americans first and not as Republicans, Cornyn answered that "I think Chairman [Richard] Burr and Vice Chairman Mark Warner have done a good job setting the tone for a bipartisan investigation.

"It's tempting to reach conclusions before we've seen all the evidence, but we haven't and we ought to wait and see where the facts take us."

Turning to the GOP healthcare bill, Cornyn said he was confident that if the House passes it, the Senate will do so as well after there is "an opportunity for amendments in the Senate."

He emphasized that this is imperative, because Republicans "have made repetitive promises to the American people that if we were given the opportunity we would repeal and replace Obamacare, which I believe is in a crisis mode."
