Barrasso: Price, Pruitt Controversial, But Right for Cabinet Posts

Fox News' "America's Newsroom"

Rep. Tom Price and former Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt are both coming under fire from Democrats as they face contentious confirmation proceedings, but Sen. John Barrasso said Wednesday both are the right people to head two of President-elect Donald Trump's key Cabinet positions.

"[Price] is the right person to be the secretary of Health and Human Services," said the Wyoming Republican on Fox News' "America's Newsroom" show. "I worked with him for a number of years. He is the right person in terms of the whole Obamacare repeal, replacement, returning the power to the states. I think he will do very well and I agree with what he has been saying."

However, Price has been accused of introducing legislation benefiting a company whose stock he owned, reports CNN. Further, the story claims that the company, Zimmer Biomet donated to Price's reelection campaign. Trump's transition team on Wednesday called on CNN to retract the story, calling it "blatantly false."

Pruitt is also the right choice to head EPA, said Barrasso, as he's often worked to protect the environment while strengthening the economy and standing up for states' rights.

The former attorney general has sued the EPA at least 14 times, but Barrasso said Wednesday that the agency, under President Barack Obama, has "gone rogue" and Pruitt can bring it back in line.

"They've gone way against the initial job description of the EPA, to protect human health and the environment by following the laws of Congress," said Barrasso. "This EPA needs wholesale changes to get back in line. They have been ignoring the law. They were found guilty of covert propaganda. We need to make sure we have clean air, clean water and land and do it in ways that don't hurt the economy."

Obama's regulations, though, are "punishing for hard working families, people living paycheck to paycheck," said the senator. "They have hurt the economy. We can have both a healthy environment as well as a strong and healthy economy."

Pruitt has also said there are doubts about climate change, which will likely come under fire during his confirmation hearings. Barrasso said he agrees the climate has changed, but "how much the man has actually contributed to that is still significantly under debate. I want to make sure we have a strong and healthy economy as well as a clean environment. Scott Pruitt is the right person to get that job done."

Barrasso said he also believes South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who has been nominated as U.S. ambassador, is another fine choice, even though she has a steep learning curve to navigate.

"She is absolutely qualified," the senator said. "I'm focused about the issues, concerns and values of the American people. She is the right person to do that. Every time Barack Obama went to the United Nations, it was either for Iran, against Israel or against American energy."
