Barrasso: Republicans 'Battling for Patients' With Obamacare Fight

Fox News' "America's Newsroom"

Republicans are "battling for patients" who have been harmed by six years of Obamacare, Sen. John Barrasso, a doctor who chairs the Republican Policy Committee and serves on the Foreign Relations Committee, said on Wednesday of the looming fight over the healthcare law.

"That's who I am focused on my fight, the patients, the families around the country who have been hurt by the Obama healthcare law," the Wyoming Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" program, explaining that patients have been harmed "by six years of Obamacare malpractice that has resulted in raising costs [and] raising complications."

People are being covered under Obamacare, he continued, but the premiums cost too much, and the deductibles are so high, they can't use their insurance plans.

Barrasso said if a resolution to repeal Obamacare passes by anything over 50 votes, it will end up on incoming President Donald Trump's desk, and he's likely to approve it.

"We did it last time, but Obama vetoed it," said Barrasso. "We want to get the power and decisions back to the people, to the families, to the doctors. Let states decide. Get the decisions out of Washington."

He said lawmakers should immediately repeal the most harmful parts of the law, including the mandate requiring everyone buy government-approved insurance, not what is best for them.

"That's the problem," said Barrasso. "When Washington comes out with a one-size-fits-all [plan], which is what Obamacare is, it hurts people back home. That's what I hear in Wyoming every weekend."

According to a recent Gallup Poll, Barrasso said, eight out of 10 voters feel the law needs to be repealed or replaced, as "for them not a good deal, it's not working for them. President [Barack] Obama is here on Capitol Hill desperately trying to save his healthcare law rather than fighting for patients who need healthcare. He always focused on the word coverage and ignored the word care. "

Barrasso said he thinks Trump is "certainly right" when it comes to healthcare, as the law has "raised costs, raised copays and deductibles, and made it harder for people to get care. The majority of people covered are under the Medicaid expansion, under Medicaid, a program of the government's that doesn't work right now."
