President Donald Trump was "absolutely correct" to pull the United States out of the Iran deal, as there were several side deals in addition to the main international agreement, Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., said Wednesday, before the Senate Finance Committee hearings with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
"There were side deals; we found out about them," Barrasso told Fox News' "Outnumbered Overtime," disagreeing with Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., who had denied earlier in the show that then-President Barack Obama had agreed to side deals with Iran. "I think President Trump was absolutely correct to pull us out of the entire Iran deal. I think that will come up [Wednesday] in the hearings with Secretary Pompeo."
Barrasso said he is also interested in asking Pompeo about his trip to North Korea after Trump's summit in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and about some of what had happened between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland.
Shaheen had also said she wants to hear from the interpreter who was in the room with Trump and Putin, while Barrasso said he thinks that is unnecessary.
"Some of the senators play to the camera," he said. "I'm going to be looking for information and updates on what's happening [Wednesday], what's happening now. When you hear the Russian ambassador is saying there were some decisions made about a future nuclear treaty, I have questions about that and want to make sure from Secretary Pompeo where we stand with that."
Barrasso said he has also got concerns Russia and China are working to undermine sanctions in place against North Korea.
"The sanctions and tough talk and action by President Trump got North Korea to the table in the first place," Barrasso said. "It's what got their attention. It seems that both China and Russia are supplying North Korea with energy and oil in an effort to undermine the sanctions. It does seem to be a sliver of good news coming out of North Korea."
