President Donald Trump fired back at criticism from former Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, repeating his mocking of the "world's most overrated general" and saying he is "glad he is gone."

Trump tweeted Wednesday night:

"Probably the only thing Barack Obama & I have in common is that we both had the honor of firing Jim Mattis, the world's most overrated General. I asked for his letter of resignation, & felt great about it. His nickname was 'Chaos,' which I didn't like, & changed to 'Mad Dog' ..."

Trump added in an ensuing tweet, Mattis was a self-promoter more than someone who could bring "home the bacon":

"...His primary strength was not military, but rather personal public relations. I gave him a new life, things to do, and battles to win, but he seldom “brought home the bacon”. I didn’t like his “leadership” style or much else about him, and many others agree. Glad he is gone!

Trump's comments continue an ongoing feud with his former Cabinet members who have gone on to criticize their former boss after leaving the administration amid fires they were involved in.

This fight sparked when Gen. Mattis called Trump divisive, by using his own words of division.

"Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people — does not even pretend to try," Mattis wrote in a statement to The Atlantic, an anti-Trump publication. "Instead, he tries to divide us.

"We are witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort."

Trump called Mattis a Democrat before the combatants parted ways in 2018. Trump has also lamented the work of deep state operatives in the U.S. government working to undermine his administration, although this one was hired by Trump himself.

The timing of Mattis' anti-Trump statement also coincides with Trump's current Defense Secretary Mark Esper's clash with the administration's call to use U.S. military force  under the Insurrection Act, when requested, in cities being overrun by rioters, arsonists, vandals, and looters.
