The documents that have been released about the FBI's handling of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn's investigation make it clear that then-FBI Director James Comey was "personally engaged" in the effort against the retired general, former Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Friday.,
"It's clear that they set up a plan to trap him into perjury, a perjury trap as it's called, Sessions, who was fired by President Donald Trump in 2018, said on Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "I don't like that. I don't think that was a proper way to do it."
The Justice Department earlier this week released documents of internal FBI investigation notes suggesting a concerted Obama administration DOJ effort to get Flynn to admit to violating the Logan Act, get caught in a "lie," or "be fired."
In 2017, Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to FBI agents about his contacts with a Russian ambassador shortly before Trump’s inauguration.
Sessions said that Comey "bragged about" the fact that FBI agents were able to get around normal procedures at the White House by not contacting the White House counsel for the chief of staff.
"He bragged about it," said Sessions. "He said he would have done it under the Obama administration or the Bush administration. He said he took advantage of the chaos of this administration to basically ambush Gen. Flynn. That is not right."
Such an action was "typical" for Comey, and of his "grandiose mindset that lacked disrespect and discipline for rules and procedure," said Sessions, adding that the Flynn incidents took place before he had become attorney general and just before Trump took office.
Sessions is seeking re-election to his old Senate seat in Alabama, but President Donald Trump is not supporting his bid because he doesn't believe he did enough to clean up the Russia investigation, said show host Ed Henry. The former attorney general insisted that "we cleaned it up basically entirely."
