Republicans warn that if President Donald Trump fires Attorney General Jeff Sessions, “All hell would break loose,” according to The Washington Examiner.
"All hell would break loose," said Rep. Mike Simpson, R-Idaho, when asked about the probable reaction.
"If he fired Mueller, that would be a problem. It wouldn't pass the smell test," another House Republican, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told the Examiner. "The American people would demand we do something."
Although Trump himself appointed Sessions, he’s repeatedly criticized the Alabama Republican for stepping away from the investigation into Russian election interference.
"It's not like a great loyal thing about the endorsement," Trump told the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday. "I'm very disappointed in Jeff Sessions."
Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., was more optimistic, saying, "Jeff's a good friend of mine. He stuck his neck out early for the president, which I have a lot of respect for, and I think that will pay off for him in the long run.”
Trump also is rumored to be considering firing special counsel Robert Mueller, who was appointed to lead the Russia probe. According to one former Republican congressional aide, "There would have to be a smoking gun," for Trump to fire Mueller.
"If he fires Mueller it would be a big deal and there would oversight hearings but it would be similar to Comey,” the aide added. “I don't think it would near impeachment. I think there would have to be proof of collusion or breaking the law."
