Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., might be done being a senator, but he may not be done opposing President Donald Trump, coming short of ruling out a 2020 primary run in a Christmas Eve Sunday appearance on ABC's "This Week."
"I don't rule anything out, but it's not in my plans," Flake told ABC's Jon Karl. "I haven't thought deeply about it, but I do believe if the president is running for reelection, if he continues that path he's on, that's going to leave a huge swath of voters looking for something else."
Karl pressed Flake, a frequent critic of President Trump and the current direction of the Republican Party, on whether Flake might see a challenge to the president via a GOP primary or from an Independent candidate.
"Oh, yes, I think he's inviting that," Flake told Karl. "He's probably inviting a Republican challenge as well – but certainly an Independent challenge, yes."
Flake, who wrote "Conscience of a Conservative," started the questioning with the worry a far left challenge from the likes of Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., or Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., might open the door for a moderate for the "swath of voters in the middle that may be looking for something else."
