A trove of emails from the files of former Attorney General Loretta Lynch revealed not only that she used an alias while conducting official Department of Justice business, but that she was in communication all the way to the White House about her tarmac meeting with former President Bill Clinton, American Center for Law and Justice chief counsel Jay Sekulow said Wednesday.
"The FBI's senior counsel and chief of staff to [former FBI Director] James Comey was in the loop on this whole discussion," Sekulow, also an attorney for President Donald Trump, told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" program.
"We now have an email that goes from the Department of Justice to the White House, to the press secretary there."
Sekulow said the ACLJ had sent requests to the FBI and the Department of Justice concerning Lynch's emails through the federal Freedom of Information Act. The FBI claimed there were no documents that were responsive to the request, he said, while the DOJ did not respond, so his group filed a federal lawsuit last October.
The courts ordered the documents, he said, and the ACLJ is still working on a full analysis of them, but the group did learn that despite the FBI's claims, there were email exchanges between them and the DOJ about the meeting. Further, he claimed, the White House press secretary's office threw "the whole thing back to the Department of Justice, saying they aren't aware of anything. They were given the talking points to give a comment on. Now the talking points have been redacted."
Sekulow said the ACLJ will go back to court for the redacted talking points, and said its investigation into the communications has just begun.
"We've also learned and again we're analyzing a lot of information here trying to check out who the people are on these emails," said Sekulow.
He continued that Lynch's then-senior counsel, Paige Herwig, was involved in the emails, and now is the deputy counsel to Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.
"It's [Feinstein's] committee, along with Sen. [Chuck] Grassley's Judiciary Committee, that are investigating the Loretta Lynch investigation and the session on the tarmac," said Sekulow. "Her former lawyer is now the lawyer for the ranking member of that committee. So there you have it."
