The head of the Iowa Republican Party launched several verbal jabs at Sen. Ben Sasse Wednesday for the latter's disapproval of President Donald Trump.

Politico reports Jeff Kaufmann spoke at a Trump rally held in Cedar Rapids and later sat down for an interview. He berated Sasse, a Nebraska Republican who is scheduled to speak at a local Iowa Republican Party dinner in two weeks, on both occasions.

"We had Sen. Ben Sasse from Nebraska, he crosses the Missouri River, and in that sanctimonious tone, talks about what he doesn't like about Donald Trump," Kaufmann said on the stage.

"You know what, Sen. Sasse? I really don't care what you like. We love Donald Trump. And if you don't love him, I suggest you stay on your side of the Missouri River."

Later during an interview with Politico, Kaufmann did not hold back his feelings about Sasse.

"He's an arrogant academic," Kaufmann said. "He's sanctimonious. His statements are geared toward what can help him. He's arrogant. And he's not a team player, when in reality, the only reason he's got any clout at all in the Senate is because the Republican Party has the majority.

"The most important thing to Ben Sasse is Ben Sasse."

Sasse has been openly critical of Trump, particularly surrounding the firing of FBI director James Comey and allegations that Trump and/or people close to him colluded with Russia to win the presidential election.

Last month, Sasse said he wasn't exactly sure what the Republican Party stands for.
