Two Iowa Caucus Sites Relocated at 11th Hour

By    |   Monday, 15 January 2024 09:17 PM EST

At least two Iowa caucus sites changed venue at the last minute on Monday, one of which was weather-related, The Washington Post reported.

Turnout has been a focal point for Iowa Republicans as the caucuses are being held amid historically low temperatures. And one precinct had to move in Woodbury County because Hornick City Hall lost heat, the Post reported. Caucusgoers instead were directed to the American Legion in the county.

In Allamakee County, GOP officials moved a site to a school to accommodate more parking, according to the report.

Temperatures are not expected to get above negative-2 degrees, with wind chill temps reaching 35 degrees below zero, making it the coldest night in Iowa caucus history.

However, Iowa GOP chair Jeff Kaufmann said he expected "robust turnout."

"As long as there's not ice that actually makes it impossible to travel, and as long as we don't have whiteout conditions, snow actually falling — I think temperatures are the least of my concern in terms of depressing turnout," Kaufmann said, via Bloomberg Television. "Iowans know how to dress for that."
