There is a growing sense of worry among President Donald Trump's aides and advisers that it could be a dark winter if Democrats take control of the House and try to impeach him.
The Washington Post cited multiple sources as saying the prospect of impeachment is real, given that the Republican Party could lose its grip on the House chamber. And the problem, according to the Post, is that Trump doesn't seem prepared enough to handle what could be coming down the pipe.
"Winter is coming. Assuming Democrats win the House, which we all believe is a very strong likelihood, the White House will be under siege," a Trump ally who has close ties to the White House told the Post. "But it's like tumbleweeds rolling down the halls over there. Nobody's prepared for war."
A White House adviser relayed to the Post a message recently delivered to Trump: The Democrats "will crush you if they win. You don't want them investigating every single thing you've done."
The Post said it spoke with 26 White House officials, advisers to the president, and both lawyers and political strategists with ties to the Trump administration to research its story, which paints a somewhat bleak picture.
Trump, for example, has discussed the possibility of impeachment but also sometimes gets irritated when others talk about it. And he has discussed getting new lawyers to beef up the White House Counsel's office to handle the legal matters that stem from the Russia investigation and the possibility of an impeachment.
Trump tweeted Wednesday that White House Counsel Don McGahn will leave the administration in the fall after, presumably, Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is confirmed.
Officials told the Post that McGahn and other White House attorneys have discussed the impeachment process with Trump in an effort to keep him in line. But Trump, according to the report, has not asked his team to put together a plan that would map out the administration's response to impeachment efforts.
