Arkansas GOP Gov. Asa Hutchinson on Sunday condemned both President Donald Trump’s election fraud rhetoric — and the House move to impeach him for it.
In an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” Hutchinson, who was a House impeachment manager during the impeachment of President Bill Clinton in the late 1990s, said a second attempt to convict Trump is a disservice to the nation.
“The impeachment is something that is both a legal equation, but it’s also a political equation,” he said. “I did not believe that with the remaining weeks that were left in President Trump’s term that that served our country well to go through the House impeachment.”
“We’re going to go through a challenging time,” Hutchinson acknowledged.
“I think the Senate will hear the legal arguments,” he said, but added, “the outcome is unpredictable.”
Hutchinson also said he hopes the GOP will turn away from “personality-driven” politics.
“The GOP had a very successful election,” he insisted. “Yes, we didn’t win the presidential election but at every other level we had success and gained seats.”
“Conservatism is alive and well,” he said, but “right now we’re fractured.”
“Our party will come back together,” he said, noting “we’ll have a lot of soul-searching … about Trump’s role … it’s gonna be about policy, trade, foreign policy, and [President-elect Joe] Biden’s policy.”
“Hopefully we’ll move away from that personality-driven [politics] that’s led us to where we are right now under President Trump,” he said.
