The House Intelligence Committee must find two new Republican members following the resignations of Reps. Mike Gallagher, R-Wis., and Chris Stewart, R-Utah, the Washington Examiner reports.
Stewart left office last September due to his wife's health concerns. Gallagher announced just last week that he plans to retire from Congress on April 19, which will leave Republicans with just a one-seat majority in the House.
Stewart and Gallagher also both sit on the House Intel panel, meaning that the GOP Steering Committee, headed by GOP leaders including House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., will have to pick two new members to join the committee.
House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner, R-Ohio, told the Washington Examiner that he "is working with Speaker Johnson to fill the vacancies."
Johnson's office declined to comment when asked for an update about committee appointments. Johnson did announce on Monday that Rep. John Moolenaar, R-Mich., will take over as chair of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party.
The Steering Committee will also have to look at filling vacancies on the House Energy and Commerce Committee and Financial Services Committee, whose leaders Reps. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., and Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., both will retire at the end of the current term.
