Americans cite health care as the top priority for the federal government to tackle — trumping the economy, immigration and national security, a new poll has found.

According to a recent Wall Street Journal/NBC News survey, half of Americans say they’d would support paying more in taxes to assure that all Americans have health care.

“The American people are saying we still need this fixed,” Lara Brown, director of George Washington University’s graduate school of political management, told the Journal.

Here’s the poll’s breakdown of voters’ priorities:

  • 24% chose healthcare;
  • 18% picked immigration;
  • 14% chose job creation;
  • 11% said national security, climate change and the deficit were the top priorities; and
  • 5% selected guns as a priority.

The April 28-May 1 survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.27 percentage points.

The financial burden of healthcare was also a concern for Americans in a Gallup poll released last week — topping concerns about wages, college expenses, housing and taxes.

“After nearly a decade, we find ourselves debating the same issue: how to make health care more affordable to more Americans,” Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., said at a recent hearing on Capitol Hill, according to the Journal.
