Joe Biden’s presidential campaign will not tap the tech and ad agency with close ties to former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg to run its 2020 digital operation.

Axios reported that the New York City agency Hawkfish had billed itself as the company that could battle the Trump campaign. But Axios noted the firm lost its luster when Bloomberg did not perform well in the presidential primaries after spending more than $1 billion.

Axios pointed out digital innovation will play a key role since traditional campaigning is sidelined because of the coronavirus.

The Biden campaign has instead decided to build its own data and digital operation. Still, as the Biden campaign looks for new ways to get its message out, most of those leading Biden’s digital operations are working in-house or at agencies that worked for Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign.

Axios said the in-house ad buying for the Biden campaign is led by Patrick Bonsignore, who worked on Clinton’s campaign and is a senior vice president at GMMB, a Washington, D.C., advertising and public affairs company. The Biden campaign has hired GMMB for digital ad placements.

Meanwhile, the Trump operation has been investing in its digital operation since he was inaugurated. And Axios said the president’s campaign has made more than 36 million contacts with potential voters since March 13, when lockdowns went into effect.

Trump’s operation dominates the digital space in no small part due to his Twitter presence.
