The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence on Wednesday took aim at the Trump administration’s approval of drive-through gun sales.

“First, the Trump administration declared gun stores “essential.” Now, the ATF is promoting them to operate “drive-through” windows,” the organization said in a tweet. “Let’s be clear, gun stores are NOT McDonalds. You shouldn’t be able to buy an AR-15 like you do a burger and fries.”

The Trump administration on Friday said licensed gun stores can do drive-thru sales of firearms or sell them out of their parking lots.

Many businesses have had to close during the coronavirus pandemic due to stay-at-home orders, but gun stores, gun makers and shooting ranges are allowed to stay open as many states deem them “essential.”

“While we appreciate the need to provide flexibility to businesses at this time, this is a naked effort to keep gun stores open at any cost, even if that cost is public safety,” Brady President Kris Brown said in a statement.

Gun sales have surged amid the pandemic. The BBC in a report last Monday said FBI data indicates that over two million guns were purchases in March alone.
