It is not a surprise that Democrats are calling for Attorney General William Barr to resign over his handling of the sentencing recommendation for President Donald Trump friend Roger Stone, but the president is "absolutely right" that sentencing Stone to 7-9 years in prison is excessive, White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham said Thursday.
She also told Fox News' "Fox and Friends" that it is "ironic" that Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., told CNN's Anderson Cooper Wednesday that Barr should resign or face impeachment, at a time she is running against Trump for president.
"This is not a surprise to us but what I will say is the president is absolutely right," said Grisham. "The sentence they want to give Roger Stone is excessive...horrible criminals have gotten absolutely no jail time. This was absolutely excessive."
Turning her attention to the election, Grisham said that "clearly everything is going great in this country for the American people, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi "has been telling people that whatever you do don't talk about the economy," Grisham said.
"Over the next 10 months, the president will continue to work," she said. "I am confident he will be elected."
Grisham Thursday also told Fox News she is "disappointed" in former Chief of Staff John Kelly, for his comments to a New Jersey audience about Trump and several of his actions.
"It's interesting that he is starting to poke his head out and say a little bit more, just like John Bolton, as we're getting close to the election," said Grisham. "I will just end it with that."
Kelly told students and guests at Drew University that he defends Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, who was removed from his spot with the National Security Council after testifying against Trump in the House impeachment inquiry, reports The Atlantic. He also spoke about his misgivings about Trump's actions on several matters, including Ukraine, North Korea, immigration, the news media, and military discipline.
