Rep. Grace Meng, D-N.Y., will introduce legislation in an attempt to block a citizenship question from being asked in the 2020 U.S. Census, ABC News reports.
Meng said she fears the question could decrease response rates and lead tor inaccurate results, according to the network news. She called the decision to add a citizenship question "deeply troubling and reckless."
The ABC News' report came in a tweet on its politics Twitter account.
Word of Meng's plan followed Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross' announcement that the 2020 census will include a question about respondents' citizenship status.
"After a thorough review of the legal, program, and policy considerations, as well as numerous discussions with the Census Bureau leadership and interested stakeholders, I have determined that reinstatement of a citizenship question on the 2020 decennial census is necessary to provide complete and accurate data in response to the DOJ request," Ross said.
