Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., faces a strong challenger in West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, a Republican, who has tied the incumbent in a recent internal poll released by the Morrisey’s campaign.
According to a survey of West Virginians taken by 1892 Polling on behalf of the Morrisey campaign, and shared with The Hill, both candidates are tied with just under 50 percent of the vote:
- Manchin: 45 percent.
- Morrisey: 45 percent.
- Undecided: 10 percent.
The poll also shows Morrisey holds a slim lead among independents, who have a large number of undecided voters.
- Independents for Manchin: 37 percent.
- Independents for Morrisey: 41 percent.
- Undecided independents: 22 percent.
The most recent public poll, which Emerson College conducted online, had Manchin up by 12 points. RealClearPolitics shows Manchin leading Morrisey by about 9 points, on average, in a state that President Donald Trump won by over 40 points in 2016.
1892 Polling surveyed 500 likely voters through Interactive Voice Response from September 24-25, with a margin of error of +/- 4.4 percentage points.
