Sen. Cory Gardner Thursday slammed Democrats for their criticism of President Donald Trump's efforts to look into the World Health Organization, accusing them of caring more about partisan politics than they do about finding results.
"They have been very vocal about their claims that the president is hurting the World Health Organization even though the World Health Organization was backing up China in its efforts to cover (coronavirus) up," the Colorado Republican said on Fox News' "Fox and Friends."
He added that if Democrats were "serious" about looking at the WHO, they would confirm Trump's nomination of Admiral Brett Giroir, currently the Assistant Secretary for Health, as the U.S. representative to the organization's Executive Board. According to the WHO website, the United States does not now have a U.S. representative on the board.
Meanwhile, China must also be investigated carefully about why it withheld information that could have saved lives, said Gardner.
"Not only did they not inform the outside world what was happening, they proactively took out the very people who were trying to blow the whistle in China about what was happening," said the senator. "This is disturbing. It needs to be thoroughly not only investigated but China has to tell the world why they acted the way they did and why they withheld information that could have saved Meanwhile, it's important that the American people be brought into the conversation about reopening the conversation immediately.
"(People) want to know when things are going to open back up and back to normal and how that's going to work," said Gardner. "Yesterday with the news that a number of people had been appointed business experts, public policy experts. It was a level of comfort that people had, excited that we are going to start this conversation as we continue to address the health emergency itself."
