A slim majority of Americans are in favor of their senators voting to convict former President Donald Trump in his second impeachment trial, according to the results of a Gallup poll released Monday.

The recent poll results show:

  • 52% of respondents want their senators to vote in favor of convicting Trump, and 45% do not.
  • 89% of Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents favored Trump's conviction by the Senate, while 7% opposed it.
  • 10% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents favored conviction, and 88% did not.

Gallup noted that ahead of Trump's first impeachment trial, 46% of Americans supported the former president's conviction while 51% wanted their senators to vote against it.

Members of the House, including 10 Republicans, voted to impeach Trump last month on one article of "incitement of insurrection" in the aftermath of the deadly Capitol riot on Jan. 6.

The Senate has rejected Republican senators' attempt to dismiss the impeachment trial, which is set to begin Tuesday, on a constitutional basis.

The recent Gallup poll surveyed 906 adults across the U.S. from Jan. 21-Feb. 2, 2021 and had a margin of error of +/- 4 percentage points.
