Amb. Friedman's Criticism Spurs Public Spat With Israeli Newspaper

U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman is embroiled in a public spat with the Haaretz newspaper after criticizing an unflattering column written about him.

A Haaretz columnist penned a critical piece titled "U.S. Ambassador to Israel's Ambulance" after a Friedman tweet earlier in the week:

20 years ago I gave an ambulance to Har Bracha hoping it would be used to deliver healthy babies. Instead, a man from Har Bracha was just murdered by a terrorist, leaving behind a wife and four children. Palestinian “leaders” have praised the killer. Praying for the BenGal family

In the column, Haaretz called Friedman "an occupation friendly ambassador" while criticizing Friedman's tweet.

Friedman fired back early Friday:

What has become of .@Haaretz ? Four young children are sitting shiva for their murdered father and this publication calls their community a “mountain of curses.” Have they no decency?

That drew responses from the Haaretz publisher and another columnist:

Mr. Ambassador Gideon Levy is right. As long as the policy of Israel that your Government and yourself support is obstructing peace process, practical annexation of the territories, perpetuating apartheid, fighting terror but willing to pay its price, there will be more Shivas.

Diplomatic correspondent Barak Ravid of Israel's Channel 10 news called Friedman's public criticism unprecedented.
